Tasting Notes:
Colour: Light yellow/green.
Bouquet: Has concentrated aromas of ripe lemon, limes and grapefruit.
Palate: A dry Riesling with concentrated mouth feel, lively with well-balanced acidity and an excellent minerally dry crisp finish.
Cellaring:
Can be drunk now, while fresh and young, but this wine is well worth cellaring, as it will continue to develop in the bottle for 5-10 years.
The Vines:
A 2.6 ha block of the Jacksons Road property of Riverby Estate was planted with Riesling (clone Gm239) in 1994. The rows are aligned North-South and the vines are trained to the Mid-Height Sylvoz trellis system. Together with vine trimming and leaf plucking during the growing season, an open grapevine canopy is created to allow ample sunlight and wind penetration. The cropping level was 3.8 tonnes/acre which contributes to the intense fruit flavours.
Harvest:
Date: 23rd April 2002
Brix: 22.6
pH: 3.05
Total Acid: 8.6g/l
Vinification:
The grapes were machine harvested in the cool of the night, de-stemmed and crushed with minimal skin contact. The lightly pressed juice was inoculated with a neutral yeast strain in stainless steel tanks. The fermentation temperature was maintained between 11-13ºC. At all times during vinification antioxidative handling was used to retain the fresh fruit flavours. Screw cap closures have been used for this wine.
