2024 was a brilliant vintage in Marlborough in terms of quality, not so good in terms of quantity. Mixed weather in the spring of 2023 resulted in a poor flowering and consequently low yields, down almost 40% on average across most of our varieties. Thereafter however the weather was perfect with several very hot days and crucially, later in the season, cool nights. This meant the low cropping fruit ripened perfectly and there was absolutely no disease pressure. It also meant we had one of our earliest ever harvests with these Riesling grapes being picked on 15 March 2024.

The grapes for this wine come from 33-year-old vines on our Jacksons Road vineyard. The perfectly clean, disease-free grapes, ideal for dry Riesling, were harvested in the cool of the night and the wine was fermented relatively dry and handled in mostly stainless steel throughout. It was bottled on 6 November 2024 .

Pale to mid straw, lemon in colour, it has an enticing nose of green apple, lemon citrus, tangelo, stone-fruit, white peach and delicate florals. The palate shows sweet basil, lemon, lime citrus, granny smith apples, greengages and ripe stone fruits. It is crisp and refreshing with a fine acid line and delicate mouth feel. For a dry Riesling it is quite luscious and peachy in style with a moreish appeal. It has a long, lingering, refreshing finish and should continue to develop stylishly for several years.

 Reviews

The attractive 2024 vintage (****) is a single-vineyard wine, grown at Rapaura. Light lemon/green, with citrusy scents, it is medium-bodied, with lemon and green apple flavours, showing very good delicacy and vigour, and a dryish (5 grams/litre of residual sugar), crisp finish. A strongly varietal wine, it's well worth cellaring to 2027+.     *****   94/100

The driest of the range of Rieslings on show here with only around 4g/l of residual sugar, and another lovely 2024 example. Sherbetty, limey and shimmering in the glass and on the nose, the searing core of citrus acidity drives this wine into a mouth-watering place, just enough of a hint - a mere hint - of sweetness to blunt that keenly honed edge, in a textural and quite luscious yet pin-sharp wine. 92/100
